Proposed By-Law Amendment

Greetings Advisers, Board Members, and State Officers!

Below you will find a By Law Amendment proposed by the State Officer Team and endorsed by the Board of Trustees. In accordance with our current By Law Structure, this amendment proposal is being distributed at least 45 days prior to the Annual Business Meeting at the State Business Leadership Conference.

The intent behind the amendment is to refine and enhance the State Officer Experience. The amendment changes the current officer positions which have classic titles to be functional titles, recognizing the true role that the state officers play in our organization.

The By Law Amendment will be voted on at the Annual Business Meeting of the State Business Leadership Conference. If passed, it goes into effect the first day of our next fiscal year, to be used in the officer election process at the 2010 State Business Leadership Conference for the 2010-2011 State Officer Team.

Below you will find the proposed By Law Amendment, which would replace Articles VI and VII of our current By Laws (available under Management: Board of Trustees at www.nevadafbla.org). Also below is the rationale and overview of the state officer team functions should the amendment pass.

The members of the State Officer Team, the Board of Trustees, and the State Management Team are more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the proposed amendment. Our goal is to enhance the leadership experience we offer student officers and give them the true credit for the work they do.

NEW! Adviser Update: February 2, 2009

Greetings Advisers!

Happy February! Happy Career & Technical Education Month! Below you will find important information about upcoming events, deadlines, and projects.

Membership Deadline Approaching:
The membership deadline for 2008-09 is March 1. This is not only an online deadline, it’s a payment receipt deadline. If paying by credit card, this is the last day to post members…if paying by a check to the national center, I encourage you to complete this process by February 20.

Business Knowledge Mastery Program:
I will be sending individual scores for all participants directly to advisers this week. Final results and recognition for the top three in each event will be in the spring newsletter, which we anticipate to be available by March 15.

State Business Leadership Conference:
We continue to look forward to the SBLC in Reno! All conference materials were published prior to the winter holiday. We look forward to another exciting event in Reno!

Instructions for requesting school site testing materials will be delivered to advisers by the end of the week.

National Anthem Singer Needed for SBLC:
We are looking for a national anthem singer for the State Business Leadership Conference! If you have a student interested in singing the national anthem, please have them email a sample to me at mike@nevadafbla.org, or mail a CD to:

Mike Oechsner
Nevada FBLA
PO Box 633
Spokane, WA 99210

The deadline for receiving audio samples is February 25.

National Center Looking for National Anthem Singer for NLC:
We are looking for a PBL member and an FBLA member to sing the national anthem at the respective NLCs. If you know someone who would like to perform, have him/her make a demo CD or MP3 and send it to jeff@thinkcybis.com or:

Jeff Douglass
Cybis Communications Corporation
One South Orange Ave., Suite 406
Orlando, FL 32801

The deadline for accepting audition tapes is Friday, May 8. Please include name, school, e-mail address and phone number, and which NLC it is for. Team Cybis will review all tapes and CDs, and the person chosen will receive notification from Cybis Communications Corporation. Audition CDs will not be returned.

New Scholarship Opportunities:
Catawba College, in historic Salisbury, NC, is providing up to five (5) $5,000 scholarships for FBLA members.  These scholarships can be combined with other scholarship offers from Catawba and are renewable for four (4) years.

The National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) is providing two (2) $1,000 scholarships FBLA and PBL students who are also members of NTHS. One scholarship will be awarded to an FBLA student and one scholarship will be awarded to a PBL student. The application deadline date for both scholarship programs is April 1.

As always, thanks for all you do! Please let me know if you have any questions!

Adviser Update: December 8, 2008

All of the materials for the State Business Leadership Conference (SBLC) are included below in this update, so it will be the primary focus. Before I get into SBLC, there are a couple other things I’d like to cover first.

Business Knowledge Mastery Program:
Remember: the deadline to submit registration for the Business Knowledge Mastery Program is 5 p.m. on December 19. For students who have completed at least the Business level of the Business Achievement Awards, there is no registration fee. Please let me know if you have any questions about any of the processes or materials, as they were distributed in mid November.

Nevada FBLA is TWITTERING!
Twitter is one of the fastest growing and most unique social networks in the world! Many of your students are already signed up for Twitter. One of the great beauties of Twitter is that it is both an internet blog site and a mass text message vehicle. If you are already a member of Twitter, please FOLLOW NevadaFBLA.  If you’re not yet a member, please sign up! Make sure to link your mobile phone number and receive text messages.

Nevada FBLA will be sending out Twitter updates as SBLC information continues to update, and while we’re on site at the SBLC, we’ll be sending out “Twitter” notices as finals are posted and results are in, along with other exciting updates during the conference. If you’re unfamiliar with Twitter, I encourage you to ask your students – they’ll help you through the process. It could also be an easy way for you to start distributing chapter information – get yourself signed up, have your students “follow” your twitters, and you simply send one message, and it forwards a mass text message to all of your followers.

State Business Leadership Conference:
As promised, the State Business Leadership Conference Materials are available before the holidays! Also as promised, the fees have not shown any increase since 2008 – everything is identical. Here are some important things to know:

  • You do not need to register for Battle of the Chapters or Spelling Relay. Just have your teams prepared and arrive to the competitions. Remember: both competitions are now open to all students of all ages.
  • If your chapter is using a two day package, please be sure to communicate with me what day you will be arriving so that I can ensure hotel reservations are made accurately.
  • Remember: the package is an “all inclusive” price that includes the conference, competitions, lodging, and all materials. No food is included in registration.
  • Unless you specifically request it, and pay the appropriate fee, all students will be in quad occupancy. We will match you up with other chapters.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any questions. I wish you all a Happy Holiday Season!

Adviser Update: October 1, 2008

Greetings Nevada FBLA Advisers and Happy October 1!

There are a number of things I need to share with you as we start to rock the school year, so let’s Get the Edge right away!

This Adviser Update will cover the following:
Fall Leadership Extravaganza Deadline Approaching!
Chapter Visits
Competitive Event Revisions
100% Class Participation Incentive
Start Up Grant Restrictions
Nevada FBLA’s New Mailing Address
Active Chapter Status Reminder
Newsletter Mailing
Adviser Name Badges
National Fall Leadership Conference
Virtual Business Challenge
Financial Literacy Challenge

Fall Leadership Extravaganza Deadline Approaching!
Please remember: October 10 is the early bird registration deadline for the Fall Leadership Extravaganzas. We have three superb events planned, and we look forward to reaching as many Nevada FBLA Members as possible!

A note of clarification: while in the ideal situation, all students attending the Fall Leadership Extravaganzas would be FBLA members, this is not required. The Extravaganza is a golden opportunity for you to bring students who are sitting on the fence about joining and showing them the amazing things FBLA has to offer. This is your opportunity to sell them on membership!

Chapter Visits:
Please be aware that the state officer team is eager, excited, and available to come and visit your chapters! Please let me, or a member of the officer team, know when we can make this happen!

Competitive Event Revisions:
We have made several additional minor revisions to the 2008-09 Competitive Event Guidelines. The new version (that will say updated 9/30/08 in the footer) will be on the www.nevadafbla.org website within 24 hours for your download. The changes are:

  • Spelling Relay is now open to all members in all grades.
  • Business Math contains the “grades middle level and 9-10 only” in the guidelines, not just on the overview sheet.
  • A spelling error in Word Processing II has been corrected.
  • Banking and Financial Systems has had the “teams of 2-3” clarified in the guidelines, not just on the overview sheet.
  • Management Decision Making: the focus for the year has been removed. The national association is focusing on a more broad spectrum, rather than a specific focus area.

100% Class Participation Incentive:
Nevada wants to see all of our chapters have an opportunity to be on stage during the national conference, and we have a new incentive to offer. For every “class” that can achieve 100% of the students in the class as members, Nevada FBLA will reimburse up to $100 for a class pizza party. Minimum class size is 18 students. For schools where class sizes are smaller, please contact me so that we can offer a modified version of the incentive for your chapter.

To receive the incentive, you must submit your 100% class participation form to the national office by the published deadline, and I must receive a copy of the entry form (via fax) no later than March 1. For classes in the first semester, please submit your entry forms early!

Chapter Start Up Grant Information and Restrictions:
As was shared in the back to school packets, Nevada FBLA provides a $250 start up grant to new and reactivating chapters. Because there have been a few questions, I wanted to clarify the restrictions:

  • This grant is for chapters who become ACTIVE, not just chapters in good standing. Please see the attachment to this email for Active Chapter Standards.
  • Chapters receiving start up grants must attend the State Business Leadership Conference.
  • Grants will be presented on stage at the State Business Leadership Conference and live checks will be presented at this time.
  • If your chapter needs special considerations, please contact me directly.

Nevada FBLA’s New Mailing Address:
Please note: the Nevada Department of Education Las Vegas Office has moved. All checks, and any materials that are to be hand delivered or mailed should now be sent or delivered to:
Melissa Scott, Nevada FBLA
Nevada Department of Education
            9890 S Maryland Parkway, Suite 221, Room 234
            Las Vegas, NV 89183

PLEASE take a moment to visit your business office and ensure that they are aware of the address change. Most schools and districts operate off of an automated system, and checks are mailed to the address in this system. They must manually go in and make the change. Please do what you can to avoid late fees by making sure your school/district has the correct address for the Nevada Department of Education!

Active Chapter Status Reminder:
The first deadlines to maintain Active Chapter Status are quickly approaching! Please consult the “Active Chapter Standards” (Download HERE) to make sure that your chapter is doing everything to continue your successful movement throughout the year!

Newsletter Mailing:
This year we will be mailing hard copies of the newsletter to chapter advisers, chapter presidents, and business partners. The first newsletter will be available at www.nevadafbla.org by the end of the week, and will be mailed by late October. Be sure to send your chapter presidents’ names so we can mail them a copy!

Adviser Name Badges:
We have a number of new advisers from over the last 18 months, we’ve had some advisers change schools, and I’m sure that some of our more veteran advisers have misplaced their Nevada FBLA Name Badges. I’d like to place a name badge order on October 15. If you need a name badge, please send me an email before October 15 so I can get one ordered for you!

National Fall Leadership Conference:
Please remember that the Early Bird Deadline for NFLC Registration is October 10. While members and chapters are welcome to attend any of the NFLCs that they’d like, Nevada FBLA has endorsed the Phoenix, AZ event due to it’s close location for our chapters.

Virtual Business Challenge (National Program):
Virtual Business Challenge-Management. Registration opens on Monday, October 13 for the fall VBC for Management. The challenge is on October 27 to November 21. This year the adviser will have to confirm online at the VBC site chapter entries for the challenge. The link to the challenge may be found on our home page at www.fbla-pbl.org.

Virtual Business Challenge – Personal Finance. In addition, Knowledge Matters is offering another challenge for Personal Finance. The registration and dates of competition are the same as the VBC. This new curriculum activity focuses on Finance and is not a competitive event. The top team in each state will be recognized with a certificate from Knowledge Matters. This is a great tool to integrate into the Personal Finance curriculum or similar curriculum.

Financial Literacy Challenge (Nationally Endorsed Program):
The Second National Financial Literacy Challenge sponsored by the U.S. Treasury Department and the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy will be offered to high school students November 3-26. To learn more visit http://flc.treas.gov/index.htm.

Thank you for your patience in absorbing this lengthy update! As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have questions.
